Novelties from the Northern Mountains Complex of Madagascar IV: A new Rinorea Aubl. (Violaceae) of restricted range from the Galoko and Kalabinono massifs

Abstract: Rinorea callmanderi Wahlert (Violaceae), a new species from northwestern Madagascar, is described and illustrated. This new species was discovered during an intensive floristic inventory in the botanically unexplored Kalabinono and Galoko massifs. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, the new species is placed in Rinorea subsect. Verticillatae Engl., the most species-rich group of Rinorea Aubl. in Madagascar. Rinorea callmanderi is morphologically most similar to Rinorea mutica (Tul.) Baill. by its op… Show more

“…This collection effort has revealed several new species in various families, e.g. Burseraceae (Daly et al, 2015), Meliaceae (Callmander et al, 2009(Callmander et al, , 2012, Oleaceae (Callmander et al, 2009a;Hong-Wa, 2016), Pandanaceae (Callmander et al, 2008(Callmander et al, , 2021, Rubiaceae (De Block, 2014;Davis & Rakotonasolo, 2021), or Violaceae (Wahlert, 2016). Since these inventories, a forest corridor between the previously protected areas of Marojejy, Anjanaharibe-Sud, and Tsaratanana has been officially protected.…”

“…Until recently the forests of Loky Manambato and Galoko-Kalobinono were almost unknown botanically. The intense inventories of the last two decades have highlighted these two forest areas as places of high-level regional endemism (Callmander et al 2008(Callmander et al , 2009(Callmander et al , 2012(Callmander et al , 2020Gautier et al 2006;Nusbaumer et al 2010;Phillipson et al 2018;Randrianasolo & Lowry 2009;Ranirison et al 2018;Schatz & Lowry 2020;Tahinarivony & Callmander 2018;Wahlert 2016). These data and other information has led to Loky Manambato and Galoko-K alobinono b eing encompassed i n Madagascar's protected area network (Goodman et al 2018).…”
