Nucleation and Growth of Silicon Oxynitride Grains in a Fine‐Grained Silicon Nitride Matrix

Abstract: Annealing induces significant microstructural changes in β‐Si3N4 ceramics densified with a silica containing additive, as signified by the precipitation of elongated Si2N2O grains in the fine‐grained β‐Si3N4 matrix, leading to a reinforced structure. The phases and microstructure evolution and the interface structural features in this composite system have been systematically studied by using X‐ray diffraction, and conventional and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. Traced from the indispensable… Show more

“…As can be seen in Fig. 7 (left), a well ordered crystalline phase with a grating spacing of 0.398 nm was found, which can be assigned to the (2 0 0) plane of Si 2 N 2 O [36,37]. This is consistent with above-described XRD results.…”

“…In addition to the reorganization of Si sites, promoted by carbothermal reaction, it is also thermodynamically possible to form silicon oxynitride (Si 2 N 2 O) from SiO 2 and Si 3 N 4 , according to reaction (7) [30], because the Si 2 N 2 O crystal structure is built up by distorted [SiN 3 O] tetrahedra [31]. When one nitrogen atom in a [SiN 4 ] tetrahedron is replaced by an oxygen atom, a tetrahedral [SiN 3 O] structural unit of Si 2 N 2 O is formed.…”

“…21 Thus, the solubility difference causes matter to be transported down the resulting concentration gradient, from the smaller to the larger particles. This is because smaller particles have a higher solubility than larger ones.…”
