Numerical and Experimental Study on Performance Enhancement of Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine With Wingtip Devices

Abstract: Darrieus type vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) are being used commercially nowadays; however, they still need to improve in terms of performance as they work in an urban environment where the wind speeds are low and the gusts are frequent. The aerodynamic performance of Darrieus turbine is highly affected by the wingtip vortices. This paper attempts at analyzing and comparing the performance of Darrieus with the use of various wingtip devices. Attempts have also been made to find out optimal working paramete… Show more

“…This downwash reduces the effective angle of attack of the wing and inclines the lift vector backward, producing an additional force component (i.e. induced drag) in the drag direction [58,59]. The reduction of induced drag is essential for aircraft.…”

“…Compared to the above passive control methods on the account of load correction, there are active control strategies that affect the vortexes through the force of actuators. These methods include morphed wings [54,55], wing blowing (chordwise or spanwise) [80,81], synthetic jets or plasma jets actuators, and are also used in others fields such as wind turbines [58]. The selection of the passive control devices or active control devices depends on the specific situation and the airplane type.…”

“…Some others have proposed ways to change the blade shape for tip vortex reduction, such as a helical blade [14,15] and elliptical blade tip [16,17].The installation of a tip device is also a method to improve the turbine performance. Winglets and bulkheads are mostly used in experiments and simulations [16][17][18][19]. Considering the 3D effect caused by supporting strut, some research was undertaken in terms of the cross section and location of the strut [8,16,[20][21][22].…”

“…Several attempts have been made by researchers to improve the VAWT efficiency by minimizing the impact of tip vortices on the turbine blade. One of the most effective methods is by adding endplates to the blade [9,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]]. An endplate is a thin piece of object that is attached to the end tip to minimize the end tip leakage vortex by preventing the air from the high-pressure side from bypassing.…”
