Nutrition assessment in patients undergoing liver transplant

Abstract: Liver transplantation (LT) is a major surgery performed on patients with end stage liver disease. Nutrition is an integral part of patient care, and protein-energy malnutrition is almost universally present in patients suffering from liver disease undergoing LT. Nutrition assessment of preliver transplant phase helps to make a good nutrition care plan for the patients. Nutrition status has been associated with various factors which are related to the success of liver transplant such as morbidity, mortality, an… Show more

“…Combination of different nutrition tools like anthropometry, and body composition analysis, have been reported to formulate a composite score for malnutrition assessment [57]. The goals of nutritional therapy are mainly focused on improving protein malnutrition and regulate nutrient deficiencies.…”

“…This study included 50 healthy volunteers; 30(60%) males and 20(40%) females, with mean age 50.32+9.43. As shown in table (8) there is a highly significant difference regarding MAC, TSFT and HGS between the control group and the patients group. PEM is a common complication among patients with liver cirrhosis that ranges from about 20% in compensated liver disease to 65%-100% in decompensated liver cirrhosis.…”

“…Various previous studies have focused on the need for nutrition intervention in LT recipients because of the high prevalence of malnutrition and nutrition-related complication (hypermetabolism, gastrointestinal symptoms, etc.) before and after the LT.[21011] The present study attempted to record these much-needed data on nutrition requirements and nutrition progression. The study could include only 54 LT patients.…”

“…Various studies have focused on nutrition assessment and malnutrition in pre-LT phase and its effect on various prognostic, nutritional, and clinical factors and the outcomes of the surgery. [11121314151617] There are very few studies addressing the nutritional aspects of acute post-LT phase. After LT, there is altered metabolism as the protein catabolism increases because of higher nitrogen losses.…”
