Nutritional Peculiarities and Diet Palatability in the Cat

Abstract: Cats have become the most popular companion animal in Western Europe. Unlike other domestic animals, cats are strict carnivores and this influences both their nutritional requirements and food preferences. Cats have very high protein requirements and their diet must contain some nutrients, such as arginine, taurine, niacin, vitamin A and arachidonic acid. Besides its nutritional value, a diet for cats must also be highly palatable. This paper offers a quick overview of feline nutritional peculiarities and the … Show more

“…A taurina é altamente solúvel em água, quando os tecidos animais são cozidos em água, podem ocorrer reduções das quantidades de taurina da proteína animal (Zanghini & Biagi et al, 2005;Spitze et al, 2003;Case et al, 1998) mas, esta perda não ocorre quando os tecidos são assados (Spitze et al, 2003).…”

“…Furthermore, olfactory acuity is diminished with ageing, adverse weather conditions, and drug use (ZAGHINI & BIAGI, 2005). Conversely, cat's taste, which is based on the carnivore pattern, has a pronounced effect on food preference; however, with further specialization.…”

“…In the facial nerve, there are receptor units (amino acids, acid, and "x" units) that can positively or negatively respond to stimuli (discharges) generated by amino acids, nucleotides, sugars, sodium ion, phosphoric acid, sodium chloride (NaCl), and potassium chloride (KCl). According to ZAGHINI & BIAGI (2005), the most abundant units are responsive to some amino acids, and cats respond positively to proline, cysteine, ornithine, lysine, - histidine, and alanine, which are described as "sweet" by humans. Conversely, cats reject the "bitter" amino acids such as arginine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan, which inhibit these units.…”

“…Providing palatable food for pet cats is an important part of creating a positive experience in the everyday life of the animal and in extension, a part of animal welfare (Boissy et al 2009;Bradshaw, 1991). Cats are so sensitive to the palatability of their food that an unpalatable food item can be rejected to the extent that the cat develops medical Michaela Hanson Master Thesis (Applied Ethology and Animal Biology) University of Linkoping problems from starvation (Zaghini & Biagi, 2005). To understand how to best develop palatable food for cats one must raise the question; "What is palatable to a cat and how do we evaluate a cat's experience with a food item?".…”

“…Tastes described as bitter by humans are usually avoided by cats. Bitter tastes can sometimes occur in commercial cat food because of the addition of important nutrients (Zaghini & Biagi, 2005). Quinine monohydrochloride, often described to have a distinct bitter taste, has been reported to be strongly disliked by cats (Carpenter, 1956).…”
