Observational study of ionospheric irregularities and GPS scintillations associated with the 2012 tropical cyclone Tembin passing Hong Kong

Abstract: This study presents the ionospheric responses observed in Hong Kong to a Typhoon, namely, Tembin, from the aspects of the occurrence of ionospheric irregularities and scintillations, using Global Positioning System (GPS) observations from a ground‐based GPS scintillation monitoring station in Hong Kong and from GPS receivers on board the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) satellites. The ionospheric irregularities and scintillations are characterized by the rate of… Show more

“…Many researches have been concentrated on the ionospheric response to typhoon/tornado (Bauer, ; Chou et al, ; Davies & Jones, 1971; Huang et al, ; Hung et al, ; Nishioka et al, ; Polyakova & Perevalova, 2013; Rice et al, ; Song et al, ; Xiao et al, ; Xiao et al, ; Yang & Liu, ; Zakharov & Kunitsyn, 2012; Zettergren & Snively, 2013). Deep convection associated with typhoon/tornado is considered as an important source of gravity waves (Fritts & Alexander, ; Vadas & Fritts, ).…”

“…In comparison, the RO ROTI values are larger. This should be caused by the different time windows in ROTI estimations and the high‐speed movement of GPS receivers onboard the COSMIC satellites (Yang & Liu, ).…”

“…The investigated area is a typical low‐latitude region where ionospheric irregularities occur involving complex electrodynamic processes. Previously, an investigation into the role of postsunset EPBs occurrences that plays in the occurrence of Es and valley region irregularities has been conducted (Li, Ning, Patra, et al, ), in addition to those into the generation and evolution of EPBs (e.g., Ji et al, ; Sun et al, ) and the seeding sources for their formation (e.g., Kumar et al, ; Yang & Liu, ). In this analysis, we analyze the occurrences of E and F region irregularities for both nighttime and daytime and discuss the linkage between their occurrences by examining simultaneous observations of E and F region irregularities.…”

“…Review of lower atmosphere forcing was provided by Lastovička (2006). Review of coupling processes in the atmosphere with respect to atmospheric waves and sudden stratospheric warmings can be found in Yigit et al (2016). The importance of involvement of the lower atmosphere in ionospheric variability studies in order to accurately capture smaller-scale features of the upper atmosphere response even to the geomagnetic storms is demonstrated by Pedatella and Liu (2018).…”
