Observations on the T Wave of the Equine Electrocardiogram

Abstract: SUMMARY The paper describes changes observed in the T wave and T vectorcardiogram in horses after various periods of exercise. Using radiotelemetry and a bipole lead all horses showed negative T waves immediately after exercise. In some of them this was followed by a markedly positive T deflection. Possible reasons for these changes are briefly discussed. Show more

“…It seems likely that the repolarisation process in the ventricular myocardium may be affected by the duration of diastole and other factors (training, fear, vagal activity, etc. ), which affect the length of the diastole including the effects of the autonomic nervous system and metabolic effects on the myocardial fibres influenced by coronary flow [14].…”

“…Electrocardiography is often considered in the diagnosis of the cause of poor performance. Morphologic characteristics in the electrocardiographic T wave have been related to lack of performance in apparently healthy horses [15]. Other studies have attempted to correlate the number of sporting events won by the horse with the value of "Heart Score", a presumed index of the ventricular size, calculated from the mean duration of QRS complex on the three Leads of Einthoven (I, II, III) [27].…”
