On Bulgarian sawflies, including a new species of Empria (Hymenoptera, Symphyta)

Abstract: Thirty-nine species of sawfly (Symphyta) are recorded for the first time in Bulgaria. Most of these were collected during early spring of 2018, in the south-east of the country (Burgas and Varna Provinces). Empriaaridicola Macek & Prous, sp. nov. is described as new to science from specimens collected in several central, east and south European countries. Lectotypes are designated for Poecilosomaparvula Konow, 1892, Empriapravei Dovnar-Zapolskij, 1925 and E.pseudoklugi Dovnar-Zapolskij, 1929. Empriapra… Show more

“…Newly obtained sequences of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), nuclear sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit alpha (NaK) and DNA dependent RNA polymerase II subunit RPB1 (POL2) (sequenced as described in Liston et al 2019 and references therein) were submitted to NCBI GenBank (accession numbers MN294991-MN295013). Nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences mentioned for Empria wui were published by Prous and Heidemaa (2012).…”

“…We complemented this default option with an SH-like approximate likelihood ratio (SH-aLRT) test (Guindon et al 2010) and ultrafast bootstrap (Hoang et al 2018) with 1000 replicates to estimate robustness of reconstructed splits. Analyzed sequences are from Prous and Heidemaa (2012), Liston et al (2019), Prous et al (2019), and this study.…”

“…In Germany, previously only recorded from the Rosenau Nature Reserve, which, like Sammern, supports a Mesobrometum community, growing on calcareous shingle of the River Isar. Liston et al (2019a) commented adversely on the suitability of the ovipositor characters described by Lacourt (1998) for separating Endelomyia filipendulae from the only other known European species in the genus, E. aethiops (Gmelin, 1790). Subsequent examination of a larger number of specimens suggests that the appearance of the sawsheath (i.e.…”

“…Vassilev (1978) summarised data on about 268 known species of the suborder Symphyta in Bulgaria. Later, several new species of the sawfly fauna of the country were also reported (Georgiev, 1990(Georgiev, , 1996Stoyanov & Ljubomirov, 2001;Georgiev et al, 2002;Blank et al, 2013;Doychev, 2015;Liston et al, 2019). However, it is necessary to note that the Bulgarian sawfly fauna is still not well studied.…”
