On the acid glycoproteins of serum and synovial fluid in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Orosomucoid, haptoglobin, PCA‐soluble glycoproteins, and sialic acid have been determined in serum and synovial fluid in rheumatoid arthritis. The increase in the serum content of sialic acid in rheumatoid arthritis is largely due to an increase in orosomucoid and haptoglobin. There is no indication that these glycoproteins arise from peripheral production in the inflammatory synovial tissue. The presence in synovial fluid of other glycoproteins of tissue origin, however, can not be excluded.

“…In arthritic subjects the present results agree closely with those of Decker and others (1959) and Nettelbladt and Sundblad (1959). When the various protein fractions are expressed as a percentage of the total proteins, the patterns in serum and synovial fluid are remarkably similar, but the following differences occur consistently:…”

“…While there is no good evidence for the direct secretion of protein into the synovial fluid, the possibility is by no means excluded (Nettelbladt and Sundblad, 1961).…”

“…2 -C+F/aSF against C's/aj, a comparison was made possible. The possibility that small amounts of acid glycoproteins may be locally produced and added to the synovial fluid has been discussed by Nettelbladt and Sundblad (7). Such a condition might have influenced the c'sF/aSF quotient.…”

“…Although α-1-acid glycoprotein 1 (alternative name: orosomucoid-1) has been widely reported as an acute-phase serum protein that is produced by the liver in response to inflammation associated with many diseases such as bacterial infections, [82] rheumatoid arthritis, [83] and even ovarian cancer, [84] it was detected and imaged by MALDI-MS in prostate cancer tissues for the first time in this study. Based on the ion maps of this protein, α-1-acid glycoprotein 1 (m/z 21560.2) was found to be mainly localized in the cancerous cell region of the prostate tissue section (Fig.…”
