On the asymmetry between subject and object relative clauses in discourse context

Abstract: This paper investigates the possibility of an effect of contextual information during the processing of sentences containing subject relative clauses (SRCs) and object relative clauses (ORCs) in Brazilian Portuguese. The predictions from one-stage models and from syntaxoriented approaches to sentence processing are outlined. An eye-tracking experiment is reported in which SRCs and ORC were presented when preceded by narrative contexts that could either favor a subject or an object relative clause analysis. The… Show more

“…Even age and education only partially explained a sentence type effect, which, despite having only 15 participants, was significant and had sufficient power and effect size (Table 6). In accordance with studies discussing the crucial role of this hemisphere in thetical grammar, we postulate that integrating parts of a text into a coherent whole is relevant for relative sentence and objective question processing [229]. These findings were novel and were limited to 15 patients.…”

“…Notice that this sort of computation requires, in the online model proposed, that three phrase markers are dealt with simultaneously, which is made possible by the parallel derivational spaces assumed (see also Nunes & Uriagereka Regarding the PPlan condition, a top-down DP functional skeleton is generated, without a CP as complement (27). It is only when the DP has been transferred to phonological encoding and starts to be articulated that the speaker takes into account the need to specify its referent (the idea of DPs as phases is assumed (Augusto, Corrêa & Forster 2012;Forster & Corrêa 2017). At this point, the speaker has no choice but to generate an independent CP to be adjoined to the DP.…”
