On the Design of Energy‐Efficient Location Tracking Mechanism in Location‐Aware Computing

Abstract: The battery, in contrast to other hardware, is not governed by Moore's Law. In location-aware computing, power is a very limited resource. As a consequence, recently, a number of promising techniques in various layers have been proposed to reduce the energy consumption. The paper considers the problem of minimizing the energy used to track the location of mobile user over a wireless link in mobile computing. Energy-efficient location update protocol can be done by reducing the number of location update message… Show more

“…Thus the most important decision of LTRACK, as it is also for all the location tracking-like algorithms, is when to make a normal handover and when to make a tracking handover. In the previous works [15,18,24] the number of handovers to be take was derived from the signalling cost parameters of the network and the mobile movement models. We propose a method using Markov chains that is an alternative way to describe the behavior of these protocols.…”

“…The tracking location of the mobile user [1] involves the identification of the direction and signal strength from the wireless service station [18,19,20]. A more effective means 70 D. Taniar and J. Goh of tracking the location of a mobile user is through the global positioning system (GPS) device located in the newer generation of mobile phones.…”

“…Reported benefits of context-aware computing include improvement in overall system performance due to reduced and more efficient user interaction [22] as well as more streamlined communication [11]. Now that context aware computing, and its applications, have been defined and described, we shall take a look at existing context-aware Tour Guide applications.…”
