One-to-one versus group setting for conducting computer-assisted TTO studies: findings from pilot studies in England and the Netherlands

Abstract: We compare two settings for administering time trade-off (TTO) tasks in computer-assisted interviews (one-to-one, interviewer-led versus group, self-complete) by examining the quality of the data generated in pilot studies undertaken in England and the Netherlands. The two studies used near-identical methods, except that in England, data were collected in one-to-one interviews with substantial amounts of interviewer assistance, whereas in the Netherlands, the computer aid was used as a self-completion tool in … Show more

“…In England, identical software was used; however, a team of 8 home-based interviewers conducted the assessments in face-to-face interviews. 14 Respondents were paid a small sum for completing the survey; the exact amount differed by country, ranging from $20 to $60.…”

“…The participant was in control of the computer (laptop) throughout the tasks, with the interviewer guiding them through each step, following a script. The one-to-one setting allowed interviewers to provide detailed instruction and feedback where appropriate (Shah, Lloyd, Oppe, & Devlin, 2013).…”

“…These country-specific value sets, obtained from the general population, enable the derivation of index-based utility scores by applying weights to the dimensions and levels described by the EQ-5D health state classifier system when completed by respondents. EQ-5D-5L value sets based on preferences directly elicited from representative general population samples are under development [5][6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
