“…The Open-minded cognition (OMC) scale was introduced as a measure of willingness to consider ideas, values, and beliefs inconsistent with one's own, and of unbiased information processing. Although some evidence has been previously reported supporting the discriminant validity and reliability of this measure in its initial publication (Price et al, 2016), we argued that existing evidence of its predictive validity was insufficient for two reasons.…”

“…OMC was associated with greater political tolerance (Studies 2a and 2b) and with less punitiveness (Study 2b, military officer), consistent with evidence from Studies 1a and 1b that OMC is associated with greater tolerance towards people from across the political spectrum. That said, one could argue that socially desirable responding might predict both higher levels of OMC (as OMC is correlated with Agreeableness, Price et al, 2015, a predictor of socially desirable responding, Kurtz, Tarquini, & Iobst, 2008;further, people generally value open-mindedness; Wilson, Ottati, & Price, 2016) as well as self-reported higher tolerance and less punitiveness.…”

“…The results of the research show that all village heads are seen by their officials and the community as open-minded and able to accept suggestions and input from other parties. Open-mindedness is seen as socially desirable when individuals find viewpoints that conform to conventional social norms (Wilson et al, 2017).…”

“…Interestingly, this effect was stronger when describing a discussion opponent, because humility soothes a conflict and opens an opponent’s mind to one’s own view. On the other hand, IH across one’s own group is appreciated less because it raises the probability of acceptance of the others’ beliefs, which disrupts the default tendency to defend one’s own view (attitude justification hypothesis, see Wilson et al, 2017 ). Interesting effects regarding styles of leadership have also been revealed.…”
