This paper presents a two-layer, four-level distributed control method for networked microgrid (NMG) systems, taking into account the proprietary nature of microgrid (MG) owners. The proposed control architecture consists of a MG-control layer and a NMG-control layer. In the MG layer, the primary and distributed secondary control realize accurate power sharing among distributed generators (DGs) and the frequency/voltage reference following within each MG. In the NMG layer, the tertiary control enables regulation of the power flowing through the point of common coupling (PCC) of each MG in a decentralized manner. Furthermore, the distributed quaternary control restores system frequency and critical bus voltage to their nominal values and ensures accurate power sharing among MGs. A small-signal dynamic model is developed to evaluate dynamic performance of NMG systems with the proposed control method. Time-domain simulations as well as experiments on NMG test systems are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Summary Microgrid is a recently developed concept for future power systems. The main characteristics of the microgrid are the capability of integration of renewable energy sources and the ability to operate in two grid‐connected and islanded modes. A significant challenge of microgrid implementation is developing comprehensive control methods to ensure efficient, stable, and reliable operation. Real‐time studies are a promising approach in this case. In this paper, various real‐time energy management approaches have been thoroughly explained following a new categorization of them. A significant literature review of real‐time simulation and modeling methods has also been presented. A review of different applications of hardware‐in‐the‐loop testing of the microgrid is included in the present study. Finally, a discussion on demand for further research has been made. The presented work is organized to allow a reader to understand the importance of real‐time studies of microgrids and highlight trends in literary works without delving deeply into each one.

This study proposes a decentralised secondary voltage and frequency control based on the state estimation principle and cooperative strategy in an islanded microgrid. Following the establishment of a large signal model of microgrid, an adaptive sliding mode observer is allocated to each distributed generation unit to estimate the transient responses of the other units based on the coupling of the physical system. In this way, the proposed secondary control is implemented in a fully decentralised structure such that each distributed generation requires its own information only; unlike conventional centralised or distributed control methods, this scheme obviates any requirement for communication network and remote measurements, which leads to improved system reliability, flexibility and scalability. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed secondary control for a typical microgrid system.
