Optically Coated Mirror‐Embedded Microchannel to Measure Hydrophoretic Particle Ordering in Three Dimensions

Abstract: Three-dimensional (3D) measurement of the behavior of microfluidic particles is vital for improving their operational efficiency and characterization. In particular, it is important to measure particle motions in 3D for exact characterization of hydrophoresis, which utilizes 3D convective flows for size separation. Herein, the 3D measurement of hydrophoretic particle ordering for the exact characterization of hydrophoresis by using an optically coated mirror-embedded microchannel is reported. The mirror, ideal… Show more

“…1). 16 The slant ridges superpose a circulating flow pattern on the axial flow. In the trenches between the ridges, the flow circulates towards the sorting/gutter side of the channel, whereas in the gap above the top surface of the ridges, the flow re-circulates back towards the focusing side of the channel (Fig.…”

“…In the absence of adhesion interactions (BSA control), the physical interactions between the cells and the ridges force the cells to remain above the ridges where the flow converges toward the focusing side of the channel (Figure 2a and S3, top). 29,30,32 Transient ligand-receptor interactions occur when the surfaces are coated with P-selectin, which mediates cell rolling along the AR, until they are detached in the gutter region (Figure 2a). In this case, the cell trajectories follow similar paths as the streamlines inside the trenches.…”
