Optimal design of dual stator spoke type vernier machine considering armature winding placement

Abstract: This paper presents the optimal design of a dual airgap spoke type permanent magnet vernier machine with dual stator dual winding (DDW) and dual stator single winding (DSW) models having an equal outer diameter and the same magnet volumes. The models were compared at a similar power and volume basis. Latin Hypercube Sampling and the Kriging Method is used to optimize the stator slots in DSW models for improved performance. 2D-Finite Element Method (FEM) was used to verify the results and compare the both model… Show more

“…Consequently results in an increased volume as well as the overall cost increase of PMVM manufacturing as compared to other machines [12]. Furthermore, many dual airgap PMVM models have been presented in [13], [14], [15], [16], and [17] to improve the torque density of the machine as compared to single airgap models. The comparison between dual airgap and single airgap PMVM is presented in [18] which shows that the torque density and other performances of the single air gap model are poor as compared to the dual airgap models.…”

“…Consequently, various PMVM topologies have been introduced to further increase the torque density. Some major topologies include consequent-pole [15], dual-stator [16][17][18][19], and multipole dual-stator designs [20], [21]. Although these designs significantly improve the torque density they have very complex structures and weak mechanical support, particularly, the dual rotor and dual stator.…”

“…Compared with other IPM machines, the spoke-type FSCW machine can achieve high torque density due to the flux concentration (Carraro et al , 2018). However, the spoke-type machine exhibits some drawbacks which are summarized as limited flux weakening capability, low reluctance torque and high torque ripple (Siddiqi et al , 2019). To improve the performance of spoke-type FSCW IPM machine, some of novel spoke-type IPM machines are proposed (Zhang et al , 2018).…”
