Optimized Surfactant IFT and Polymer Viscosity for Surfactant-Polymer Flooding in Heterogeneous Formations

Abstract: Surfactant Polymer flooding (SP flooding) has drawn more attention than Alkaline Surfactant Polymer flooding (ASP flooding) in China due to the difficulty of demulsification and the scale formation problem from the alkali in ASP. Traditionally, the primary requirement for the surfactant in SP flooding is the lowest interfacial tension (IFT). However, core flooding tests performed in a series of heterogeneous models have demonstrated there exist optimized surfactant IFT and polymer viscosity for SP flooding, wh… Show more

“…Highest oil recovery can be achieved under optimum IFT and not under the lowest IFT of the binary system. However, this concept (Wang et al 2010) is based on light oil reservoir with high permeability and low temperature. Dagang Oilfield is a reservoir with mediumlow permeability characterized by high temperature, significant heterogeneity, and high brine salinity.…”

“…studied the rheological characteristics of ternary multisystem in porous media through the laboratory experiment [4]; There are researches on solution of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide passed through the core, the viscosity of produced fluid at different time and pressure difference of polymer solution passing through core [5]. There are also a lot of researches, through the core experiment, analyzed the actual viscosity and viscosity loss factor of polymer solution in porous media in polymer flooding [6][7]. Although there is the study on surfactant adsorption of chemical flooding [8] and the study on interfacial tension of surfactant [9], but study on changing patterns of interfacial tension and adsorption properties of binary multisystem in porous media is less [10].…”

“…It will result in the reservoir damage, difficulty demulsification, and the reduction of the ASP system viscosity [10]. As a new flooding method, the SP system without alkali can solve the above problems [11]. As the system is free of alkali, it can play the viscoelasticity of polymers to the maximum degree and erase the corrosion and scaling caused by alkali.…”
