Organochlorinated Compounds in the Air at NAEO, an Eastern Background Site in China: Long-Range Atmospheric Transport versus Local Sources

Abstract: Gas and particle samples were collected by a high-volume sampler from July 2009 to March 2010 at an eastern regional background site in Ningbo and analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). The total (gas + particle) air concentrations of 11 OCPs ranged from 5.34 to 417 pg/m 3 , of which HCHs, DDTs, chlordane and HCB concentrations ranged from 0.67 to 214 pg/m . Similar seasonal trends of HCH, DDT, chlordane, HCB concentrations were observed with the winter maximum. Dia… Show more

“…Coal burning for power generation has been considered one of the most significant anthropogenic source of PAHs by some researchers Liu et al, 2002;Arditsoglou et al, 2004;Sahu et al, 2009). PCBs are a kind of classic POPs due to their high lipophilicity, toxicity and difficulty of degradation (Guo et al, 2014;Liu et al, 2014). Although CFPPs is a known PCBs emission sources (Jansson et al, 2011;Li et al, 2011Li et al, , 2015, the PCBs emission characteristics in CFAs from CFPPs has not been studied extensively as other POPs in China.…”

“…Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a well-known class of ubiquitous pollutants characterized by high lipophilicity, extreme toxicity and high resistance to environmental degradation process (Breivik et al, 2002;Guo et al, 2014;Liu et al, 2014). These physiochemical properties are representative of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and PCBs can act as their ideal marker compounds for global redistribution of POPs (Hornbuckle et al, 1993;Ockenden et al, 2003).…”
