Osteoid osteoma of mandible

Abstract: Osteomas are benign, slow-growing osteogenic tumours rarely occurring in the craniofacial bones. Osteomas are characterised by the proliferation of compact and/or cancellous bone. It can be of a central, peripheral, or extra skeletal type. The peripheral type arises from the periosteum and is rarely seen in the mandible. The lingual surface and lower border of the body are the most common locations of these lesions. They are usually asymptomatic and can be discovered in routine clinical and radiographic examin… Show more

“…[ 46 ] Osteomas mostly involve mandible in this study and this finding is the same as the findings of previous reports. [ 45 46 47 48 ] Cemento-osseous dysplasia, which affects bone metabolism replacing normal bone by cemento-osseous tissue, constituted 0.3% of all lesions, also it was seen in woman and mandible mostly. These data are consistent with Su et al .,[ 49 ] Waldron,[ 50 ] MacDonald-Jankowski[ 51 ] and Kawai et al .…”

“…Peripheral osteomas do not usually cause diagnostic problems. Radiological image of central osteoma requires differentiation with complex odontoma and Garré's sclerosing osteomyelitis, eosinophilic granuloma and osteosarcoma [8]. Central osteomas are sometimes located near mandibular molars; in this form, they are often recognized as condensing osteitis or idiopathic osteosclerosis [9].…”
