Outcomes of adrenalectomy in patients with primary hyperaldosteronism - a single centre experience

Abstract: Introduction. Primary hyperaldosteronism is a common cause of secondary hypertension. In patients with proven unilateral overproduction of aldosterone adrenalectomy can cure hyperaldosteronism with high probability and a positive effect on hypertension. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of unilateral adrenalectomy on blood pressure and laboratory parameters. The secondary objective was to identify parameters that would allow the prediction of hypertension cure. Methods. We performed a cross-sec… Show more

“…Generally, two causes of PA are distinguished to guide optimal treatment: an aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA ) and bilateral adrenal hyperplasia (BAH) [1]. APA is mostly treated by adrenalectomy (ADX), which can lead to cure or clinical improvement [2][3][4][5]. In case of BAH, medical treatment with mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) is indicated, which is highly effective to reduce blood pressure and treat hypokalemia [2,6].…”
