Ovarian Cyclicity and Reproductive Performance of Holstein Cows Carrying the Mutation of Complex Vertebral Malformation in Japan

Abstract: This study was carried out on 71 lactating Holstein Friesian cows to investigate the resumption of ovarian cyclicity postpartum and the reproductive performance in cows carrying the mutation of complex vertebral malformation (CVM) compared with control ones. The cows were distributed in two dairy farms in Hiroshima Prefecture, Western Japan. Blood samples were collected from the cows to detect carrier cows with CVM mutation. Furthermore, plasma samples were collected weekly after calving from control cows (n =… Show more

“…Cows with a plasma P 4 level of ≥1 ng/ml were considered to exhibit luteal activity [ 31 , 32 ]. Ovulation was considered to have taken place 5 days before the first rise of P 4 to 1 ng/ml or higher [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Normal or abnormal resumption of pp ovarian cyclicity was defined as follow: in normal resumption of ovarian cyclicity, ovulation occurred ≤ 45 days after calving followed by regular ovarian cycles, while in delayed resumption of ovarian cyclicity, ovulation followed by regular ovarian cycles did not occur until > 45 days after calving [ 35 ].…”

“…A plasma P 4 level of 1ng/mL was taken as the threshold value to indicate luteal activity. 11 Cows and heifers were classified into the following different groups, based on the characteristics of their P 4 profiles, as described previously: 12-14 1. Normal cycle: Regular cycle throughout the study period and/ or those with initial regular cyclicity followed by a high P 4 level (>1 ng/mL) being maintained due to pregnancy.…”

“…Detection of such type of carrier semen is a crucial step toward the genetic improvement of the dairy production. CVM mutation was reported to affect the reproductive performance of the dairy cattle in Japan (Ghanem et al. 2007b).…”
