Overview of the National Ignition Facility

Abstract: The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the world's largest and most energetic laser system for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and experiments studying high energy density (HED) science. The NIF is a 192-beam, Nd-glass laser facility that is capable of producing 1.8 MJ, 500 TW of ultraviolet light, and over 50 times more energetic than other existing ICF facilities. The NIF construction began in 1997, and the facility, which was completed in 2009, is now fully opera… Show more

“…Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) crystal is currently one of the important and irreplaceable optical components used in high power laser systems for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. However, its laser damage resistance becomes the key factor that severely restricts the output performance of the lasers [ 4 ] and this is an urgent technological issue to be resolved in the engineering application.…”

“…KDP single crystal, which in nature is a kind of soluble inorganic salt, has both disadvantages for machining such as deliquescent, extremely soft, brittle and thermally sensitive, and advantages as excellent nonlinear electro-optic switches and frequency conversion devices such as Pockels cells and second-harmonic generation in laser-based inertial confinement fusion (ICF) research (Brereton, 2013;Lin et al, 2013;Hurricane et al, 2014). However, these distinct properties also make it extremely difficult for KDP crystals to obtain a flawless surface.…”
