Oxidative stress and ischemia-modified albumin in chronic ischemic heart failure

Abstract: We observed impaired oxidant/antioxidant status in favor of oxidative stress in CIHF patients. Oxidative stress may be a key factor in the development of hypoalbuminemia in CIHF. Further studies are needed to establish the relationships among IMA, albumin, and redox balance in CIHF.

“…Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) test does predict early about the cardiac ischemia. [14][15][16] and is a good prognostic marker in chronic ischemic heart failure 16 and Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG). 17 This is positive in a variety of conditions giving rise to tissue ischemia.…”

“…Based on the currently available literature, a majority of the HF conditions have been correlated with oxidative stress for the past several decades. In particular, ischemic heart disease and/or reperfusion injury have been shown to display a hyper-oxidative state wherein increased reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) generation correlates with a worsening of myocardial injury [9][10][11]. In spite of these observations, supplementation with antioxidants seems to be inefficient to treat such conditions in a failing heart [12][13][14].…”

“…Decreases in antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the elevated presence of DNA and lipid oxidation have also been reported [4,10,[13][14][15][16]. While these studies have provided valuable insight into the role of oxidative stress in congestive heart failure (CHF), they did not account for possible differences between the sexes.…”

“…The presence of oxidative stress in heart failure has been identified by the increased generation of ROS via increased NADPH oxidase (NOX), xanthine oxidase, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and other pro-oxidant enzyme activities [4,[6][7][8][9][10][11][12], leading to specific foot-prints of oxidative damage. Decreases in antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the elevated presence of DNA and lipid oxidation have also been reported [4,10,[13][14][15][16].…”
