Oxidative Stress Status in Patients with Choledocholithiasis: Before and After Endoscopic Sphincterotomy and Biliary Clearance

Abstract: Choledocholithiasis may cause biliary obstruction which leads to hepatocellular injury. Oxidative stress has been proposed as a possible mechanism involved in this disorder. This study evaluates the oxidative stress burden in patients with choledocholithiasis and secondary cholestasis, before and after endoscopic sphincterotomy. Experimental part: Patients diagnosed with choledocholithiasis and secondary extrahepatic cholestasis were included in the study between January 1st 2016 and October 31st 2016. In all… Show more

“…Animal studies reported that body increased levels of sorbitol cause oxidative damage and activates stress genes. Hyperglycemia also induces glucose autooxidation and produces oxidants with reactivity similar to the hydroxyl radical, the most dangerous ROS capable of interacting with DNA [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease expressed by chronic obstructive pneumopathy [15], pancreatic insufficiency with chronic diarrhoea and several secondar y complications [16] like liver disease [17] with complicated cirrhosis [18], osteoporosis or diabetes [19]. Because of the pancreatic exocrine deficiency, reduced capacity for vitamin D storing in adipose tissue, a deficiency in liposolubles vitamins occur [20], with complications like osteoporosis, osteopenia [21], frequently infections and modified biochemistry influenced by multiple factors like environment or smoking [22].…”
