The current study evaluates the antibacterial and antifungal activities of extracts from different parts of Tagetes patula Linn. (Asteraceae), reported for the first time in a single set of experiments. In the preliminary assay, the methanol extract of the flower (JFM) was found to possess antimicrobial activity against a number of bacteria with inhibition zone diameters ranging from 9 to 20 mm, the bioassay-guided fractionation of which led to the isolation of a flavonoid patuletin (3) in high yield as the active antibacterial principle with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 12.5 µg/disk against Corynebacterium spp., Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Micrococcus luteus. Its glucoside, patulitrin (4), was found to be weakly active, except against Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Streptococcus fecalis, and Streptococcus pyogenes with inhibition zone diameters of 11, 16, and 12 mm, respectively. The cinnamate derivative (3b) of 3 showed antibacterial activity comparable with the parent flavonoid with a MIC value of 50 µg/disk against Corynebacterium spp., whereas benzoate derivative (3a) was found to be devoid of any activity; both the derivatives are new compounds. Moreover, the longchain alcohol 5, which displayed antibacterial activity in the preliminary testing, was obtained in large quantity directly from the petroleum ether extract of the involucre of the flowers.

Objective: Phytochemical screening has revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins from methanolic extract of Cestrum nocturnum. In this research, we have identified and confirmed the structures of the constituents by gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS) from the methanolic extract of C. nocturnum leaves.Methods: Shade-dried leaves were powdered and extracted with methanol by cold extraction procedures and the crude extract obtained was used for GC-MS.Results: There were total five components prominently eluted from C. nocturnum extract, viz., ethyl citrate, phytol, 4-isobutylmorpholine, n-hexadecanoic acid, and α-amyrin. Conclusion:GC-MS studies helped to recognize the phytochemical constituents based on their retention time and verification of MS libraries. In future, C. nocturnum leaves may be subjected to different extraction procedures and number of elucidating phytoconstituents can be studied for their ethnopharmacological relevance citing the literature.

Chromatographic fractionation of bark extracts from Simira glaziovii (Rubiaceae) afforded the steroids b-sitostenone, stigmastenone, b-sitosterol and stigmasterol, methyl trans-4-hidroxy-3-methoxycinamate (1), the alkaloids harmane (2) and the new stereoisomer of ophiorine B (3). The structures were established by 1 H and 13 C NMR, including 2D techniques and mass spectral analysis, of the natural products and pentaacetyllyalosidic acid (4a) and b-carboline monoterpene tetraacetylglucoside (5, 1,22-lactamlyaloside) derivatives obtained by chemical transformations.Keywords: Simira glaziovii; Rubiaceae; steroids; harmane; (-)-ophiorine. INTRODUÇÃOPlantas do gênero Simira vem despertando interesse devido principalmente às atividades fototóxicas apresentadas por alguns de seus constituintes químicos e pelas informações etnomédicas sobre o tratamento de manchas na cavidade oral e dentária 1 com cascas frescas de S. rubescens. A literatura registra resultados de estudos químicos das espécies S. Maxonii 2-4 , S. mexicana 5 , S. Salvadorensis 6 e S. rubra 6 . Foram identificados, além de policetídeos, alcalóides fotossenbilizantes furoquinolínicos e b-carbolínicos 5,6 . Os alcalóides harmana, maxonina e estrictosamida aparecem como os mais comuns neste gênero 7 .Este artigo descreve o primeiro estudo fitoquímico de um espécimen de S. glaziovii (K. A preparação dos dois novos derivados da ofiorina B (4a e 5) e a análise dos dados espectrométricos de RMN 1 H e 13 C (1D e 2D) permitiu caracterizar o alcalóide 3 e estabelecer a completa atribuição dos deslocamentos químicos dos átomos de hidrogênio e carbono, eliminandose inclusive equívocos registrados na literatura. RESULTADOS E DISCUSSÃOO fracionamento cromatográfico do extrato metanólico das cascas de S. glaziovii forneceu além dos alcalóides harmana (2) e (-)-ofiorina (3), a mistura de b-sitosterol, estigmasterol e 3,4-dimetoxicinamato de metila (1). O alcalóde 3 apresentou dados espectrométricos semelhantes aos da (+)-ofiorina B já registrada na literatura 8 e, levando em consideração de que se trata de um glicosideo natural, identificou-o como o novo estereoisômero deste alcalói...
