Paradigm shift: 'ABC' to 'CAB' for cardiac arrests

Abstract: CPR has a proven role in improving survival in cardiac arrest victims, especially those who are outside the hospital. Guidelines published by the AHA have included CPR as a vital intervention for decades. The previous guidelines have focused on the maintenance of airway as the first step, there by delaying the provision of chest compressions. However, the 2010 AHA Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care corrects this by changing the A-B-C of CPR to C-A-B, acknowledging th… Show more

Mobile: +6281393319000 BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, with half the incidence being sudden heart attacks (Khalid et al, 2010). In the United States, every year 330,000 people die of coronary heart disease and of that number, 150,000 cases are sudden heart attacks that occur outside the hospital (Thom et al, 2006).…”

“…Other changes in the 2010 to 2015 implementation guidelines are as follows: a. 'Look, Listen and Feel' has been removed from the basic life support (BLS) algorithm as it was found to be inconsistent and a waste of time (Khalid, Abdul and Juma, 2010;. b.…”

“…[ 1 ] Immediate cardiac compression by bystander can help buy time till medical help reaches and can improve the outcomes. [ 2 3 ] For India, availability of a larger number of CPR-trained laypersons is the need of the hour, as medical help may take time to reach the site of cardiopulmonary arrest. Advanced CPR management outside the hospital is limited by lack of advanced equipment, expertise and workforce, making resuscitation outside the hospital a difficult task.…”
