Dispersed settlement areas (e.g., Slovenia) result in lower development of fixed public transport lines and thereby car-dependent lifestyles. To avoid congestion inside the cities and on highways in these areas, shared mobility modes e.g., carpooling, is one of the effective solutions, increasing the occupancy of personal vehicles. However, passenger pick-up and drop-off locations still remain an important challenge for carpool users and transport officials. As a collection point for carpooling, we can consider "park and pool (P+P)" lots near highways' interchanges. This study aims to examine the impacts of P+P lots near interchanges on carpooling behavior of users and on improving sustainable mobility on highways in such dispersed settlement areas. To do so, we employed a field survey, incorporated the P+P lots into the mode choice model, and examined different scenarios using the macroscopic transport model. It is found that factors such as travel cost, public transport service limitations, and improved parking facilities impact highway users' mode choice. Sixty percent of respondents are willing to leave their car in P+P lots near interchanges. The results also show that P+P lots can increase the number of carpool users. It causes remarkable savings in terms of operating and external costs because of the reduction in total distance and time travelled by personal vehicles as well as parking demand reduction in cities. At the moment, especially in Central Europe, it is easier to invest in a "demand reduction" infrastructure than to increase the capacity of infrastructure. Therefore, P+P lots could be a "win-win" situation for both users and operators.

Traffic congestion has been a major transportation problem in developing countries as private vehicles ownership has been increased dramatically each year. To solve this problem, local authorities need to construct new roads as well as parking infrastructure to meet consumer demand. Park and Ride can be regarded as a transportation management concept that can solve this demand. Park and Ride refers to a transportation management concept where travelers transit from a private transportation (i.e. motorcycle, car, bicycle, and other private transportation modes) to a public transportation system (i.e. bus, tram, heavy railway, mass rapid transport, and so forth). Park and Ride is believed to reduce private transportation in the metropolitan area of a city. In addition, Park and Ride should be located near a public transportation station in the suburban area. Hence, travelers can easily transit from their private vehicles in the suburban area to commute to urban area by using the public transportation system. This research will focus on the study of Park and Ride development in Bandung Metropolitan Area, Indonesia. Park and Ride, as explained earlier, may offer a solution to a sustainable transportation in Bandung Metropolitan Area.

This review paper focuses on research schemes regarding urbanity and urbanization, and brings together both cultural and physical approaches. First, we review the cultural and social construction of urbanity (as related to urbanization) in Germany. In the early 20th century, urbanity was mainly the result of identity derived from a historical perspective in cities. This has changed profoundly in recent decades as urbanity stems more and more from various urban lifestyles and the staging of societal experiences, as summarized in the German term, "Erlebnisgesellschaft" (thrill-seeking society). The discussion is extended by an assessment of the recent state of the art regarding physical urban research. The focus lies on different fields of research; we address topics such as biodiversity, urban climate, air pollution, and resilience, as well as their impact on urban planning and governance. In conclusion, in order to tackle recent developments and future challenges regarding social and environmental issues, an integrative approach urges novel cross-and inter-disciplinary research efforts in urban studies, including urban-rural linkages. A newly constituted assessment of urbanization and city quarter development is proposed; the assessment focuses on the conjoint analysis of mobility, "Energiewende" (energy transition), cultural drivers, demographic development, and environmental issues.
