Pelagibaca bermudensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel marine bacterium within the Roseobacter clade in the order Rhodobacterales

Abstract: A Gram-negative, chemoheterotrophic, facultatively anaerobic, slightly halophilic, oval-shaped marine bacterium, designated HTCC2601 T , was isolated from the western Sargasso Sea by high-throughput culturing involving dilution to extinction. Although the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the isolate and Salipiger mucosus was 96?5 %, phylogenetic analyses using different treeing algorithms clearly indicated that the strain forms a distinct lineage within a clade containing the recently classified gener… Show more

“…The number of the genera belonging to the Roseobacter clade has increased considerably through the continual descriptions of novel genera and reclassifications (Euzéby, 1997). Recently, genera exhibiting relatively high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of more than 96 % to the representative(s) of the Roseobacter clade, irrespective of their phylogenetic positions, have been described (Cho & Giovannoni, 2006;Kim et al, 2008;Hwang et al, 2009;Vandecandelaere et al, 2009;Romanenko et al, 2011;Hahnke et al, 2013;Yoon et al, 2013b). In this study, we describe one novel strain (designated BS-B2 T ) that was isolated from a tidal flat of the southern coast of the Korean peninsula, in which cockles (Tegillarca granosa) are known to inhabit in large numbers.…”

“…Phylogenetic analyses, including multiple alignment of 16S rRNA gene sequences, determination of sequence similarity and generation of phylogenetic trees, were performed using the ARB package (Ludwig et al, 2004) and PAUP* (Swofford, 2002) as described previously (Cho & Giovannoni, 2006). Sequence comparisons in the ARB database and BLASTN hits from GenBank showed that strain IMCC3223 T was closely related to members of the genus Lewinella.…”
