Penconazole and calcium ameliorate drought stress in canola by upregulating the antioxidative enzymes

Abstract: The aim of this research was to gauge the alternations in the lipid peroxidation and antioxidative enzyme activity in two cultivars (cv. RGS003 and cv. Sarigol) of canola under drought stress and drought tolerance amelioration by penconazole (PEN) and calcium (Ca). Plants were treated with different polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations (0, 5, 10 and 15%) without or with PEN (15 mg L–1) and Ca (15 mM). The Ca treatment prevented the negative effects of drought on fresh weight (FW) in RGS003 and Sarigol at 5… Show more

“…Due to the high level of ROS in the body when plants are dehydrated, which causes membrane damage, protective enzymes such as SOD, POD, and CAT begin to work to remove excessive reactive oxygen species to maintain intracellular balance. At the same time, studies have found that the activities of POD and CAT in the root of cold-acclimated rice are significantly enhanced, indicating that these antioxidant enzymes also play the most important role in cold resistance [40]. The results of the study showed that, compared with WT and UL A. thaliana, the activity of CAT and POD in transgenic A. thaliana with MbMYB4 was significantly increased, and the content of MDA was significantly reduced.…”

“…Drought stress limits the growth, development and survival rate of plants, leading to tremendous losses in yield, thus threatening global agricultural production [ 39 ]. In our study, 15% PEG was used to simulate drought stress [ 29 , 40 , 41 , 42 ]. Therefore, the analysis of the response of sprouts to drought stress at the bud stage is important for actual agricultural production [ 43 ].…”

“…The consistent growth sprouts were selected as plant materials for further experiments. A 15% PEG concentration (the solvent was distilled water) was used to simulate drought stress (D), while distilled water treatment was set as control treatment (CK) [ 29 ]. The samples were collected after 0 h, 3 h, 6 h, 12 h, 24 h and 48 h of treatment, respectively.…”

“…For instance, in Manihotesculenta, the SOD activity of leaves increased significantly under drought stress [60]. In Brassica campestris, SOD activity and the content of H 2 O 2 increased obviously when plants were subjected to drought stress [61]. Nevertheless, further study are needed for the 10 key VcMYB DEGs we screened to reveal the accurate signaling pathways of its involvement.…”
