Typology is one approach used to take a policy in planning activities. The concept of this area typology that can be used on riverbanks requires an understanding of land use, housing and problems that occur in riverbank areas. The purpose of the study was to determine the typology of the population around the banks of the Deli River, Sukaraja Village, Medan Maimun District. In this case, the factors that influence the population to live around the riverbanks are found, as well as the problems that occur around the riverbanks. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method and spatial analysis. The results showed that the typology of the population that formed along the riverbanks formed a linear pattern with the river channel as its axis, the houses built with a position facing the river with the typology of using lanting houses/floating houses and stilt houses/pillar houses (pillar houses). . The arrangement of settlements on the banks of the river maintains the pattern of building mass as it exists because of the lack of land. However, by stopping new development towards the river and stopping the new growth being carried out on the side of the river, it is done to minimize flooding that will enter the area along the river. This research can be used as a reference for the Medan City government to make clearer policies related to development regulations in the Deli River area and to make people aware not to live on riverbanks so that the government and society can become good partners in implementing river management.
