The low learning outcomes are influenced by the low interest of students in participating in learning, one of the contributing factors is the lack of use of learning media that is in accordance with student characteristics and learning objectives. This study aims to develop Problem Based Learning Big Book learning media on the theme of togetherness. This research belongs to the type of development research which was developed with the ADDIE model through five stages, namely the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The subjects involved in this study were material experts, design experts, learning media experts, and 23 students. Data collection in the study was carried out using observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. The instrument used is in the form of media validity sheets, as well as multiple choice test questions. The data obtained in the study were then analyzed using correlated t-test analysis techniques. The results of data analysis show that tcount > ttable or 5.23 > 1.68, with the decision being made that if tcount > ttable, then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the problem-based learning-based big book learning media that was developed is effectively used as a learning medium, which supports the learning process in class so that it can achieve learning goals well and can improve student learning outcomes.

Purpose – This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using Big Book media on early reading skills in children aged 5-6 years old.Design/methods/approach – This study used a quantitative approach which was carried out in an experimental method with a pre-post-test design. The sampling technique uses a simple random technique with 30 children. Data collection technique is by means of tests. The analysis technique for testing the hypothesis uses the difference test (t-test).Findings – The results showed that children in the experimental group who used Big Book media had a higher average score when compared to children in the control group who used magazine media. Based on the t-test calculation, findings indicate that there was a significant difference between the two groups. Thus, it can be concluded that the Big Book media is effective on early reading skills in children aged 5-6 years old.Research implications/limitations – This study was limited to one location, Mutiara Al-Madani Kindergarten, Jambi Indonesia, and with a small sample size, so the generalizability of the findings was also limited. It is necessary for future researchers to conduct studies with a wider scope and a more diverse population.Practical implications – The use of Big Book media can be an alternative learning media that can attract children's interests and can actively involve children in gaining rich literacy experiences in improving early reading skills.Originality/value – This study contributes to understanding of teacher's reference material in using learning media for early reading skills in children aged 5-6 years old. “…Penggunaan media big book ini juga dapat digunakan siswa untuk belajar mandiri di rumah, selain bentuknya yang menarik yang disertai dengan ilustrasi gambar, juga diberikan warna-warna yang menarik perhatian siswa, sehingga siswa tertarik untuk membacanya (Wandini et al, 2020) sehingga mampu meningkatkan keterampilan membaca permulaan siswa serta memudahkan untuk dalam pembelajaran membaca permulaan dan memahami teks bacaan dengan dukungan gambar. Pengembangan media big book sangat sesuai dilakukan sebagai alat pendukung keterampilan membaca permulaan siswa. Tujuan penelitian ini mendeskripsikan kualitas, proses, dan efektivitas pengembangan media big book dalam pembelajaran membaca permulaan. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan penelitian Research and Development (R&D). Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, observasi, dan angket. Teknik analisis data menggunakan analisis deskriptif kuantitatif. Berdasarkan analisis data tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat kualitas, proses, dan efektivitas pengembangan media big book dalam pembelajaran membaca permulaan di kelas 2 sekolah dasar.
