Cloves is one of the main plantation commodities and is native to Indonesia. Leaf spot disease with necrosis symptom is often found in clove plants. Interferences to photosynthesis caused by leaf spot disease can cause plant death. Bacillus is known to inhibit the development of pathogens through nutrient competition and antibiosis mechanism. This study aims to identify Bacillus sp. RJ09 through molecular approach and determine its potential in suppressing the development of Pestalotiopsis sp., the cause of clove leaf spot by in vitro examination. Identification of the fungus was carried out by observing the morphology which included the color of the colony, the shape and size of the conidium of the isolated fungus. Identification of Bacillus sp. RJ09 was performed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using a pair of primers that amplified gyrB gene region of ±1400 bp, followed by sequence analysis. The ability of Bacillus sp. RJ09 as a biological agent against fungi associated with leaf spot was determined using an in vitro double culture method. Pestalotiopsis sp. was found as the fungus associated with leaf spot disease and can cause black necrotic spots on the leaves. Molecular identification of Bacillus sp. RJ09 showed the highest similarity value of 99.40% with B. subtilis subsp. subtitles. In vitro dual culture showed B. subtilis subsp. subtilis RJ09 can inhibit the growth of Pestalotiopsis sp. colonies by 75%.

This study aimed to assess the impact of combinations of varying soil amendments and water amounts on the leaching water requirement for cucumber growth and production. Saline soil was collected from Banongan, Situbondo, with soil electrical conductivity (EC) of 4-6 dS m-1. A 10 kg soil sifted with a diameter of 2 mm was placed in each mini lysimeter. Leaching was carried out until the soil EC reached below 2 dS m-1. The results showed that soil leaching reduced soil EC from 5 dS m-1 to 1.6-1.8 dS m-1; meanwhile, EC in leachate ranged from 2-2.3 dS m-1. Biochar treatment caused an increase in leaching water requirements. In addition, applying biochar combined with 40 mm day-1 of water produced the highest fruit number. The combination treatment of cow manure 100 g pot-1 (equivalent to 20 t ha-1) and biochar 30 g pot-1 (equivalent to 6 t ha-1) and adding 40 mm day-1 of water during each water application produced the most prominent fruit volume. Furthermore, utilizing 40 mm day-1 of leaching water produced the best number of leaves, fruit weight, length, and fruit circumference.

The invasive fall army worm Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith) is a major global agricultural pest, originally from tropical and subtropical America, now affecting over 80 plant species across Africa, Asia, and beyond. This study examines its host preferences and developmental dynamics, focusing on four host plants: Zea mays L., Glycine max L., Carica papaya L., and Brassica oleraceae var. acephala L. Using a complete randomized design, mortality and developmental rates of larvae were evaluated. These results revealed that C. papaya and B. oleraceae leaves resulted in maximum larval mortality (80 and 65%, respectively). This can be attributed to the presence of secondary metabolites like tannins, terpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids, which exhibit toxic and antifeedant properties. This study highlights the armyworm's ability to adapt to alternative hosts like G. max and B. oleraceae, even surviving on C. papaya leaves, typically used as a botanical pesticide.
