Perfectionism and Burnout in Canoe Polo and Kayak Slalom Athletes: The Mediating Influence of Validation and Growth-Seeking

Abstract: Recent research suggests that validation-seeking and dimensions of perfectionism may be antecedents of athlete burnout. The present investigation examined whether validation and growth-seeking mediate the relationship between self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism and burnout. One-hundred and fifty canoe polo and kayak slalom athletes recruited from the top two divisions in the UK completed measures of validation and growth-seeking (GOI), perfectionism (HMPS), and athlete burnout (ABQ). “…This research has provided support for the hypothesized positive relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and athlete burnout (Appleton et al, 2009;Hill et al, 2008;Hill, Hall, Appleton, & Murray, 2010). A positive relationship between self-oriented perfectionism and athlete burnout has also emerged, albeit indirectly via third-order variables (Hill et al, 2008).…”

“…Recent empirical research has demonstrated that the relationship between socially prescribed and self-oriented perfectionism and athlete burnout may be mediated by third-order variables (Hill et al, 2008(Hill et al, , 2010. With this in mind, the purpose of the current study was to investigate the mediating role of motivation regulations in the relationship between self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism and athlete burnout.…”

“…Em outro estudo com 93 atletas do circuito brasileiro de vôlei de praia, foi verificado que esta também possa ser a explicação de não terem sido encontradas diferenças significativas entre as dimensões do burnout em função das categorias e do tempo de prática esportiva (VIEIRA et al, 2013). Para Marques et al (2010), as diferenças nas percepções das situações estressantes podem estar vinculadas muito mais a diferenças no perfil psicológico das pessoas, como características de personalidade (HILL et al, 2010) …”

“…The numerous studies that used partialling techniques to examine residual PS and residual PCwhich include many studies by Hill and colleagues (e.g., Hill & Curran, 2016;Hill et al, 2008;Hill, Hall, Appleton, & Murray, 2010)-have yielded important insights into the complexities of multidimensional perfectionism and the different, often opposite, relations that PS and PC show with indicators of psychological adjustment and maladjustment.…”
