Performance Comparison of WiFi and UWB Fingerprinting Indoor Positioning Systems

Abstract: Ultra-wideband (UWB) and WiFi technologies have been widely proposed for the implementation of accurate and scalable indoor positioning systems (IPSs). Among different approaches, fingerprinting appears particularly suitable for WiFi IPSs and was also proposed for UWB IPSs, in order to cope with the decrease in accuracy of time of arrival (ToA)-based lateration schemes in the case of severe multipath and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) environments. However, so far, the two technologies have been analyzed under very … Show more

“…In conclusion, it can be said that KNN's effectiveness for indoor positioning was largely improved by using multiple NNs to support trilateration. This method achieved comparable performance to various works found in the IPS literature [31,32,33,36] but with overall less complexity for deployment and flexibility against system changes.…”

“…Among all of them, nowadays the solutions based on UWB sensors are the most valuable choices to obtain high accuracy at a moderate cost. UWB devices use TOA or TDOA as the sensing parameter, achieving a better accuracy than the technologies based on RSS (such as Bluetooth, RFID, and WiFi), which were traditionally used in indoor location systems [30]. One of the most widespread UWB integrated circuit (IC) used in industry is the Decawave DW1000 module [31], which is frequently found in many solutions such as the set of tags and anchors from Pozyx [32].…”
