The anti-slip (AS) layer of the cement concrete pavement (CCP) can probability decrease traffic accidents and extend the service life of the road. Epoxy resin has excellent adhesion and mechanical strength, making it possible in this field. Herein, a flexible waterborne epoxy resin (WER) without a small molecule emulsifier was synthesized by bisphenol A epoxy resin, poly (propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PDE), diethylenetriamine (DETA). The mechanism of the group reaction was characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) determined the heat of curing of WER. Then, the physical properties of WER were enhanced by the silane coupling agent modified nano-silica (SCA-NS) and the composite's water absorption rate and mechanical propriety were evaluated. Finally, the pavement performance of the AS layer was prepared and tested as well as compared with the commercial waterborne epoxy resin (CWER) and emulsified asphalt (EA). The result shows EA has low durability and adhesion strength than epoxy resin. The small molecule emulsifier and low-flexible resistance of CWER decrease water stability and antisliding durability of the AS layer. Due to applied nanomaterial reinforced and without small molecule emulsifiers, the WER base AS layer shows extremely high adhesion strength, water stability, and skidresistance durability at addition 3 wt% of SCA-NS, which have a great potential for CCP.

Generally, the warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology can reduce the mixing and paving temperature effectively as compared with that of hot mix asphalt (HMA), which is considered more environment-friendly. In this study, the environmental impacts and resource consumptions of WMA and HMA pavements were analyzed comparatively using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. A LCA model of pavement was built; meanwhile, the relevant life cycle inventory (LCI) of WMA and HMA pavements was also collected and analyzed. The midpoint impact categories including Global Warming Potential (GWP), Chinese Abiotic Depletion Potential (CADP), and Particulate Matter Formation (PMF) were assessed for five cases. The assessment results showed that the resource consumptions of both WMA and HMA pavements in entire life were almost at the same level, while the environmental impacts of WMA pavement related to greenhouse gases and PM2.5 emissions were significantly less than that of HMA pavement, except for the case where the long-term performance of WMA pavement is much worse than that of HMA pavement. In final, it could be concluded that WMA pavement is more environment-friendly compared with HMA pavement although they have the same-level resource consumptions.

The micromorphological changes and the strength formation mechanism of the curing of epoxy asphalt, which is mostly used for steel bridge deck pavements, were investigated. A tensile test was used to analyze the mechanical properties of epoxy asphalt, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to determine the change in the epoxy peak area. Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to observe two-dimensional and three-dimensional micromorphological changes, respectively, during the curing reaction of epoxy asphalt. The results of the tensile and FTIR tests on epoxy asphalt showed that the tensile strength and epoxy conversion rate both increased with the curing time and exhibited similar trends, indicating that the network formed by the crosslinking and polymerization of epoxy groups causes the increased strength of epoxy asphalt. The curing degree of epoxy asphalt during the curing reaction can be indirectly evaluated from the conversion rate of epoxy groups. The asphalt tended to evenly be dispersed in the continuous phase of the epoxy resin during the formation of the epoxy resin network, and the network structure increased the deformation of the epoxy resin. The epoxy asphalt curing reaction process was classified into three stages based on the degree of curing.
