Performance Limits of Visible Light-Based Positioning for Internet-of-Vehicles: Time-Domain Localization Cooperation Gain

Abstract: In this paper, we aim to give a unified performance limit analysis of the visible light-based positioning (VLP) for a vehicular user equipment (UE), which will help to understand the essence of time-domain localization cooperation and gain insights into how to improve the performance of the vehicular VLP system. This is not easy due to the complex system models and the complicated dependency between UE location performance and orientation performance. To achieve the above goal, we will first characterize the c… Show more

“…Obviously, high location accuracy cannot be guaranteed by this method. VLP is a promising localization method based on transmitting visible light signals, and it has attracted increasing attention from industry and academia recently [54], [55], [56]. However, VLP has severe performance degradation in NLOS case and heavily relies on special equipment.…”

“…Therefore, it is of great importance to study the tracking performance of channel/sensing state under different mobility models. Some initial tracking performance analysis has been conducted in [56] for visible light-based positioning, where the conditions under which the tracking process is stable (i.e., the state tracking error is bounded as time goes to infinity) is derived, and the converged state error is also analyzed. We may leverage the tools therein and study the fundamental tracking performance limits in more general ISAC systems.…”

“…ere are many other methods proposed for estimating the location of vehicles. Visible light-based positioning for IoV is discussed in [33]. e work in [34] proposed the use of nanointegrated devices to provide accurate distance estimation for VANET.…”

“…The above issue can be avoided by visible light positioning (VLP). In existing VLP system, one solution is to adopt a photodetector (PD) at the receiver [7]- [11], which can estimate the transmission distance by detecting and analyzing the light properties such as received signal strength (RSS) [12]- [14], time of arrival (TOA) or time difference of arrival (TDOA) [15], and phase of arrival (POA) or phase difference of arrival (PDOA) [16]. However, the RSS-based technique relies on the condition that Jiaojiao Xu, Nuo Huang, and Chen Gong are with Key Laboratory of Wireless-Optical Communications, Chinese Academy of Sciences, School of Information Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China.…”
