There are growing concerns over the threat to human health from the unregulated use of antimicrobials in livestock. Broiler production is of great economic and social importance in Indonesia. This study used a structured questionnaire approach to explore the human behaviours and economic drivers associated with antimicrobial use in small commercial broiler systems in Indonesia (n = 509). The study showed that antimicrobial use was high with farmers easily able to access antimicrobials through local animal medicine, however, it was difficult for farmers to access veterinary advice on responsible antimicrobial use. The most significant finding was that the relative cost of antimicrobials was low, and farmers observed improvements in productivity rates from routine antimicrobial administration. However, farmers seldom kept detailed records on farm productivity or economic costs; this is a hurdle to undertaking a more detailed economic analysis of antimicrobial use. There is a need for further research on the cost-effectiveness of alternative methods of preventing disease and ensuring that feasible alternatives are easily available. Farm-level economics and securing the food supply chain need to be central to any future policy interventions to reduce antimicrobial use in broiler systems in Indonesia and this observation is relevant at a regional and global level.

The broiler farming in partnership system is not only about getting a lot of profit but also how to maintain partnershipsto keep thebusiness.Basically broiler farming in partnership system formed because of the mutual need between farmers and partner companies. Usually, farmers who choose a partnership system because they have limited capital and they want low risk while the partner companies have limited area and worker. This qualitative research was conducted in Blitar Regency which became one of broiler farming centers in Indonesia. This paper discusses how the social capital of farmers contributes to the sustainability of the partnership. The result showed that farmers and partner companies started a business based on trust between them. When one of the parties break the rules and belief became destroyed then the partnership will be threatened. If the social network is secure and visible from the interchange among members, then business will be maintained. So the social capital of farmers makes a positive contribution to support the sustainability of partnership.

This article will discuss the form of social exchange in broiler breeding using core-plasma partnership system. This study was a case study taken place in Blitar Regency as one of broiler cattle breeding centers in Indonesia. The result of research showed that cattle raisers followed core-plasma partnership system because it was considered as having smaller risk than independent system. The core-plasma partnership began with social exchange between cattle raisers and Partner Company. Profit-loss, mutual need, and trust consideration underlies the exchange occurring in core-plasma partnership. Cattle raisers with limited business capital could run broiler breeding with Partner Company’s help as integrator that provided day old chicken (DOC), feed, and drugs, and marketed the harvest product. Meanwhile, Partner Company with limited land and workers could also benefit from the partnership ran. The exchange was considered as fair when it generated profit for each other despite difference profit obtained by the parties. The end of partnership implied that there was no longer social exchange between the parties engaged.
