Performance Variability as a Predictor of Response to Aphasia Treatment

Abstract: Background Performance variability in individuals with aphasia is typically regarded as a nuisance factor complicating assessment and treatment. Objective We present the alternative hypothesis that intra-individual variability represents a fundamental characteristic of an individual’s functioning and an important biomarker for therapeutic selection and prognosis. Methods Nineteen individuals with chronic aphasia participated in a 6-week trial of imitation-based speech therapy. We assessed improvement both … Show more

“…Therefore, one aim would be to keep the variability in the measurement low (Ciccone, 2003). On the other hand, the between-session variability in performance can be an indicator for the improvement potential of an IWA (Duncan, Schmah, & Small, 2016). Thus, disregarding the variability in IWA could oversimplify the disorder (Nespoulous, 2000).…”

“…Unfortunately, the administrative constraints of our protocol did not allow us to follow our population longer, which is a limitation of our study. Contrary to previous studies, we used three baseline evaluations in order to control the intraindividual variability of speech production, which is widely known in patients with poststroke aphasia (Duncan, Schmah, & Small, 2016;Villard & Kiran, 2018). Nevertheless, in order for multiple baselines to be relevant and meaningful, the Single-Case Experimental Design (SCED) methodology would have required optimally five baselines at least.…”

“…Nineteen native English speakers with chronic aphasia secondary to ischemic stroke participated in a larger study of intensive, imitation-based aphasia therapy (Duncan et al, 2016;Lee et al, 2010). Fourteen subjects were selected from that superset based on participation in three baseline rsfMRI scans before the initiation of therapy.…”
