Perianal candidosis—a comparative study with mupirocin and nystatin

Abstract: Both agents eradicated Candida, the major difference being the marked response of the diaper dermatitis to mupirocin. Mupirocin should be applied topically 3-4 times daily or with each diaper change and is an excellent antifungal agent.

“…After 14 days of treatment, however, clinical cure rates were significantly higher with clotrimazole (68.1%) than with nystatin (46.9%, P < 0.05). The comparative efficacy and safety of nystatin in DD were assessed on several occasions in the past 14,15 . Clinical cure rates at day 14 were higher with both agents in our study than those reported for miconazole nitrate, where overall cure rates (clinical cure plus microbiologic cure) of only 23% were reported; only 10% of the control group (zinc oxide/petrolatum) improved ( P = 0.005).…”

“…To treat angular cheilitis caused by overclosure, petrolatum or lip balm can be used as a mechanical barrier. In cases associated with bacteria, topical mupirocin 2% ointment three to four times daily until resolution can be helpful (36). Angular cheilitis resulting from deep orofacial grooves may be amenable to soft tissue augmentation with fillers at the oral commissures to correct the anatomic defect (37).…”

“…Despite the importance of the nature and extent of microbial colonisation with regard to adequate treatment of diaper dermatitis, the scientific basis is weak, and many of the old studies are inadequate. Further studies to elucidate the microbiological basis of the disease are therefore warranted [15, 16]. …”
