Perioperative fasting time among cancer patients submitted to gastrointestinal surgeries

Abstract: Objective:To identify the length of perioperative fasting among patients submitted to gastrointestinal cancer surgeries. Method: Retrospective cohort study, developed by consulting the medical records of 128 patients submitted to gastrointestinal cancer surgeries. Results: The mean of total length of fasting was 107.6 hours. The total length of fasting was significantly associated with the number of symptoms presented before (p=0.000) and after the surgery (p=0.007), the length of hospital stay (p=0.000), bloo… Show more

“…The decrease in tongue pressure was significantly associated with the length of ICU stay on multiple regression analysis. In gastrointestinal surgery, the patients who had to fast longer had longer postoperative ICU stays [20]. In the present study, the period between surgery and initiation of oral alimentation was positively associated with the length of ICU stay.…”

“…This, however, limits their necessary nutrient intake and in consequence promotes endogenous catabolism, thus elongating their hospital stay. Patients with gastrointestinal tumors are especially at risk for malnutrition complications relative to their diagnosis, hospitalization, and treatment (major surgery elicits a state of hypermetabolism for high-energy demands); factors that compromise the patient’s ability to react to fasting periods and prognosis in general [1, 2].…”
