Periostin expression in cancer-associated fibroblasts of invasive ductal breast carcinoma

Abstract: Periostin (POSTN) is a secreted cell adhesion glycoprotein that plays an important role in proliferation, adhesion and migration processes, as well as in regulation of mechanisms related to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). It also plays a key role in angio- and lymphangiogenesis and in formation of distant metastases. The aim of this work was to determine expression of POSTN in invasive ductal breast carcinoma (IDC) and in non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and to correlate its expression wit… Show more

“…In our recently published study (27), as well as in studies of other authors (20), a different localization of POSTN expression in invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) e.g. in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and in cancer cells was confirmed.…”

“…Existing literature data on the role of POSTN expression in breast cancer confirmed POSTN expression localized both in CAFs and in cancer cells, in which expression was usually found in 30-60% of analysed cases of cancer (19,20,27).…”

“…The role of periostin in breast cancer has been described. Periostin is expressed in invasive ductal carcinoma cells [87]. Its expression increases with the cancer grade, suggesting that periostin may play a role in cancer progression [88].…”
