“…However, after the initial influx of circulating blood monocytes, there also frequently appears to be an induction of mitotic activity in local macrophages. Daems (1980) has suggested that under steady-state conditions, blood monocytes rapidly migrate through the vasculature of tissues and organs for the purposes of surveillance, and only under inflammatory or other insult conditions are retained in the tissues and differentiate into macrophages in order to assist in the activities of the resident tissue macrophages.
