Personality profiles and frequent heavy drinking in young adulthood

Abstract: Few studies examining the link between personality and alcohol use have adopted a comprehensive modeling framework to take into account individuals’ profiles across multiple personality traits. In this study, latent profile analysis (LPA) was applied to a national sample of young adults in the United States to identify subgroups defined by their profiles of mean scores on the Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness personality factors. “…Zhang et al ( 39 ) have proposed several alcohol consumption trajectories, based on a cohort followed for 15 years, which can give meaning to the heterogeneity of existing results with the Big Five model. These authors suggest two risk profiles, the “Resilient” one, more vulnerable to social pressure for drinking, and the “Reserved” one, with higher risk for alcoholism.…”

“…Correlates and determinants of binge drinking Person-specific factors (I): personality, impulsivity, attentional bias Concerning the 'Big Five' personality traits, there is consistent evidence that binge drinking is more common among those who score highly on extroversion, but low on agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and neuroticism (Cheng & Furnham, 2013;Ibanez et al, 2015;Zhang, Bray, Zhang, & Lanza, 2015). However, when a recent large-scale study in Britain accounted for other factors, such as gender, intelligence and socio-economic status, only extroversion and agreeableness remained significant predictors (Cheng & Furnham, 2013).…”

“…It is likely that people who have an interest in wine and are willing to spend quite large sums of money in buying them, will have certain psychological personality traits, such as interest in new experiences, high sociability, an intellectual interest in wine flavor differences or a desire to signal their taste to others (Francis & Williamson, 2015). While there has been limited work investigating this area, it has been shown that there is a generally positive link between alcohol use and extraversion, impulsivity, or neuroticism and a negative link with conscientiousness (Zhang, Bray, Zhang, & Lanza, 2015). A study involving aroma characterization and liking of a set of Italian red wines showed a link between "innovativeness" (related to openness) and consumers who could reliably differentiate samples (Torri et al, 2013).…”
