Epiphytic weeds living on oil palm trunks will complicate harvesting activities. In addition, the presence of this weed can increase the risk of accidents being hit by fruit during harvesting. The objective of this research was to obtain herbicide and its efficient concentrations to control epiphytic weeds using root infusion method. The research was arranged in a single factor completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and five replications. Active ingredients of herbicide that used were methyl metsulfuron at a concentration of 20%, 30%, and 40%, glyphosate 30%, and triclopyr + diesel fuel at a ratio of 1:19. All treatments except triclopyr were diluted in 100 ml water for each epiphytic weed. Weed mortality rate (%) was observed every week for one month. The results showed that a solution of 30% methyl metsulfuron herbicide in 100 ml of water and 30% glyphosate in 100 ml of water was the most optimal treatment in controlling epiphytic weeds. Cutting the entire suction root of epiphytic weeds can increase the chance of weed mortality.

Palm oil (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) is one of the fastest growing in the tropics so that the development of oil palm plantation is the one threats of the decrease of biodiversity including herpetofauna. That is why this research becomes important to study the impact of oil palm plantation on diversity and composition of herpetofauna. This research was conducted in July 2018 in Ketapang District, West Kalimantan Province in two oil palm plantation companies (KGP and CNG). Data collecting were using Visual Encounter Survey (VES) method combined with Strip Transect Method, in five lands covers (young-aged, middle-aged, old-aged oil palm plantation, high conservation value, and shrubs area) taken simultaneously with three repetitions. The results of this study showed that the establishment of oil palm plantations has impacted species diversity and species composition of herpetofauna. This research showed that the species number of herpetofauna in oil palm plantations is higher than the baseline area. The result of this study also showed that the species diversity and richness of herpetofauna in the high conservation value area is higher compared to another land cover. However, the overall results showed that oil palm plantation has positive impacts to increased and loss of herpetofauna species, there are losing one species and gaining seven species in CNG oil palm plantation, and losing two species and gaining fifteen species in KGP oil palm plantation.

Nowadays, one of the most highlighted issues in oil palm plantations is land fire. The fire event is thought to have a negative impact on biodiversity, including birds. One of the major fires ever occurred in Indonesia in 2015. The fire also struck on PT Waimusi Agroindah, South Sumatra. The high accusation that the fire only caused a negative impact triggered a lawsuit against oil palm companies that experienced fires to pay the cost of environmental damage fines. The small number of studies conducted to determine the impact of fires on bird species diversity requires further research to determine the condition of bird species diversity after the fire, especially on oil palm plantations. The method for estimating impacts of fire is to compare species diversity between unburnt and post-burn land. While the observation method used is the line transect in the morning and afternoon with three repetitions. The results showed that there were 39 species of birds on burnt land and 36 species of birds on unburnt land. The highest type of Margalef index is shown by burnt land which is equal to 6.37 and the Evenness index is 0.90. Overall there was an increase in bird species diversity on post-burnt land because there were gains of 5 species and loss of 2 species. Changes in the composition of bird species in both land types are caused because post-burnt land has a higher feed potential. The majority of birds at the study site are insectivorous. There are 13 species of bird which is included into protected species according to the Permen LHK No. P 106 of 2018 and also CITES and IUCN status.
