Phages InfectingVibrio vulnificusAre Abundant and Diverse in Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) Collected from the Gulf of Mexico

Abstract: Phages infecting Vibrio vulnificus were abundant (>104 phages g of oyster tissue−1) throughout the year in oysters (Crassostrea virginica) collected from estuaries adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico (Apalachicola Bay, Fla.; Mobile Bay, Ala.; and Black Bay, La.). Estimates of abundance ranged from 101 to 105 phages g of oyster tissue−1 and were dependent on the bacterial strain used to assay the sample. V. vulnificus was near or below detection limits (<0.3 cell g−1) from January through March and was most ab… Show more

“…Vibriophages capable of infecting V. parahaemolyticus are abundant in sediment and water (Baross et al, 1978;Comeau et al, 2006). In addition, phages specific to V. vulnificus were abundant in the water and sediment of the Gulf of Mexico (DePaola et al, 1997(DePaola et al, , 1998. The V. vulnificus phages isolated were morphologically diverse and exhibited different patterns of host infectivity (Pelon et al, 1995;DePaola et al, 1998).…”

“…such as V. paraheamolyticus, V. cholerae, V. fluvials, V. vulnificus and V. harveyi have been isolated from seafoods. However, published reports on bacteriophages from V. alginolyticus is rare (Spencer 1960;Kellogg et al, 1995;De Paola et al, 1998;Pasharawipas et al, 2005;Vinod et al, 2006;Chrisolite et al, 2008;Busico-Salcedo and Owens, 2013). The present study reports isolation and characterisation of a V. alginolyticus lytic bacteriophage from the brackishwater clam M. meretrix.…”

“…Reports on the isolation of bacteriophages belonging to the family Podoviridae from the aquaculture ecosystems are scanty. A member of this group infecting V. vulnificus isolated from Gulf Coast oysters has been earlier described (DePaola et al, 1998).…”
