Pharmacokinetics of enrofloxacin in Korean catfish (Silurus asotus)

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetic profile of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite, ciprofloxacin, in Korean catfish after intravenous and oral administrations. Enrofloxacin was administered to Korean catfish by a single intravenous and oral administrations at the dose of 10 mg/kg body weight. The plasma concentrations from intravenous and oral administrations of enrofloxacin were determined by LC/MS. Pharmacokinetic parameters from both routes were described to have a two-compar… Show more

“…According to our investigation, ENR was a new drug used in aquaculture in the South China regions and was not popular like other two FQs due to its relative high price. Besides, ENR is metabolized and transformed into CIP in mammalian species (Küng et al 1993), avians (Knoll et al 1999) and fishes (Lewbart et al 1997;Kim et al 2006). The concentrations of NOR were higher than those of CIP, which was in accordance with the results of the water and fish samples.…”

“…The half‐life ( T 1/2 λ z = 64.66 h) determined for ENR in healthy fish is similar to those described in allogynogenetic silver crucian carp after oral administration (Fang et al ., ). This is longer than those in sea bass (25.02 h) (Intorre et al ., ), Korean catfish (34.13 h) (Kim et al ., ), and snakehead fish (35.80 h) (Fang et al ., ), but shorter than the value in turbot (98.63 h) (Liang et al ., ). The data indicate differences in elimination of ENR between different animal species.…”

“…administration of ENR in healthy crucian carps, absorption is rapid ( T max = 0.5 h), which is in agreement with the data ( T max = 0.5 h) reported in grass carp (Xu et al ., ). However, an even longer T max has been described in allogynogenetic silver crucian carp ( T max = 2 h) (Fang et al ., ) and in Korean catfish ( T max = 3.44 h) (Kim et al ., ) after oral administration.…”

“…Blood samples were taken in to heparinized tubes and stored at -70°C until analysis. Analytical method reported by Kim et al (2006) was used for determination of enrofloxacin in plasma. Briefly, samples were analyzed on a Hewlett-Packard 1100 series LC/MSD system.…”
