Pharmacological Effects of Phosphatidylserine Enzymatically Synthesized from Soybean Lecithin on Brain Functions in Rodents.

Abstract: SummarySoybean transphosphatidylated phosphatidylserine (SB -t PS) was prepared from soybean phosphatidylcholine by transphos phatidylation using phospholipase D, and the fatty acids composition and pharmacological properties were compared with those of bovine brain cortex-derived phosphatidylserine (BC-PS) which was reported to im prove cognitive disorders of senile dementia patients by oral administra tion (300mg/day). The molecular species of SB-tPS are rich in linoleic and palmitic acids whereas those of B… Show more

“…Even though the acyl-groups of Soy-PS are quite different from that of BC-PS, studies using drug-induced amnesic and aged rodents have suggested that the effects of Soy-PS on cognitive function are identical to that of BC-PS [1316]. …”

“…Clinical investigations have also shown that B-PS treatment can improve Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related cognitive disorders (8,9). Sakai et al (10) prepared soybean leci thin transphosphatidylated phosphatidylserine (SB-tPS) from soybean phosphatidylcholine by transphosphati dylation using phospholipase D, and they found that the intravenous or intraperitoneal administration of SB-tPS increases brain glucose concentrations in mice and antagonizes amnesic effects of scopolamine (SCP) in rats, as did B-PS.…”

“…SB-tPS was prepared from soybean phosphatidyl choline (PC80TM; Croklaan b.v., Wormerveer, Holland) as reported in a previous paper (10). SCP, CYH and THA were obtained from Sigma Chemicals (St. Louis, MO, USA).…”

“…SB-tPS was prepared from soybean phosphatidylcholine and L-serine by transphosphatidylation using phospholipase D as reported previously (8). SB-tPS emulsified by sonication in isotonic saline was orally administered (50 mg / kg) with a probe according to each experimental schedule.…”
