Bipedalism is a key adaptation that shaped human evolution, yet the timing and nature of its evolution remain unclear. Here we use new experimentally based approaches to investigate the locomotor mechanics preserved by the famous Pliocene hominin footprints from Laetoli, Tanzania. We conducted footprint formation experiments with habitually barefoot humans and with chimpanzees to quantitatively compare their footprints to those preserved at Laetoli. Our results show that the Laetoli footprints are morphologically distinct from those of both chimpanzees and habitually barefoot modern humans. By analysing biomechanical data that were collected during the human experiments we, for the first time, directly link differences between the Laetoli and modern human footprints to specific biomechanical variables. We find that the Laetoli hominin probably used a more flexed limb posture at foot strike than modern humans when walking bipedally. The Laetoli footprints provide a clear snapshot of an early hominin bipedal gait that probably involved a limb posture that was slightly but significantly different from our own, and these data support the hypothesis that important evolutionary changes to hominin bipedalism occurred within the past 3.66 Myr.

Resumen: El evolucionismo no es un pensamiento estanco. Más bien se trata de un cuerpo científico que ha experimentado cambios. De una parte, pueden distinguirse en la actualidad dos grandes corrientes: el lamarckismo y el darwinismo. Por otra, el segundo sobre todo ha cambiado desde Darwin hasta hoy. Este trabajo analiza el desarrollo de estas dos grandes líneas teóricas desde el siglo XIX hasta la actualidad, y hace hincapié en la importancia de las mismas para el estudio del animal humano, objeto-sujeto tanto de la Historia como de la Arqueología. Palabras clave: Evolucionismo, lamarckismo, darwinismo, síntesis evolutiva, sociobiología, arqueología darwinista, arqueología lamarckista.Abstract: Evolutionism is not a closed notion. On the contrary, this scientific discipline has experienced some changes. On one hand, it is possible to distinguish nowadays two major trends: Lamarckism and Darwinism. Moreover, the latest has changed since Darwin's times. This work examines the development of these two major evolutionist theory trends from 19 th century to date, making especial emphasis in their importance regarding the study of the human animal, object-subject either in History and Archaeology. Key words: Evolutionism, lamarckism, darwinism, evolutionary synthesis, sociobiology, darwinian archaeology, lamarckian archaeology. INTRODUCCIÓN: OBJETIVOS, METODOLOGÍA Y OTROS ASPECTOSPor regla general, cuando en las Ciencias Sociales se hace mención del evolucionismo, suele darse por sabido que dicha corriente teórica es algo muy concreto y homogéneo. Así, en lo que menos hincapié suelen hacer los estudiosos del tema es en la diversidad de posicionamientos teóricos que encierra dicho concepto; de ahí el error, por ejemplo, de proclamar darwinista a corrientes evolucionistas que nada o poco tienen que ver con la propuesta teórica de Charles Darwin. Muchas veces se han venido haciendo críticas al evolucionismo sin conocerse bien a qué versión del mismo se refieren, con lo que, al confundirse el todo con la parte, se han hecho acusaciones globalizadoras que carecen de fundamento. O no han sabido precisar sus autores la corriente epistemológica concreta, o no han comprendido de qué evolucionismo estaban hablando. Para ilustrar el caso citaremos un fragmento de la obra de Susan Bock sobre los hunos: "Cuando los chinos llegaron a una zona donde tuvieron que cambiar sus instituciones económicas por razones geográficas (donde tendrían que abandonar la agricultura por irrigación y diversificar su modo de existencia), pusieron un límite artificial * Agradezco a los doctores J. Developmental biology and evolutionary biology are both mature integrative disciplines which started in the 19 th century and then followed parallel and independent scientific pathways. Recently, a genetical component has stepped into both disciplines (developmental genetics and evolutionary genetics) pointing out the need for future convergent maturation. Indeed, the Evo-Devo approach is becoming popular among developmental biologists, based on the facts that distant groups share a common ancestry, that precise phylogenies can be worked out and that homologous genes often play similar roles during the development of very different organisms.In this essay, I try to show that the real future of Evo-Devo thinking is still broader. The evolutionary theory is a set of diverse concepts which can and should be used in any biological field. Evolutionary thinking trains to ask « why » questions and to provide logical and plausible answers. It can shed some light on a diversity of general problems such as how to distinguish homologies from analogies, the costs and benefits of multicellularity, the origin of novel structures (e.g. the head), or the evolution of sexual reproduction. In the next decade, we may expect a progressive convergence between developmental genetics and quantitative genetics.
