Photonic atoms and molecules

Abstract: Recent advances in the investigation of optical modes in single three-dimensional whispering-gallery microcavities and coupled microresonators are reviewed. Due to the small size and high quality factor these resonators have the potential for development of single-photon emitters, nanojets, sensors and low-threshold lasers and for fundamental studies of optical matter interactions.Photoluminescence confocal image of a spherical whisperinggallery microcavity with monolayer of CdTe quantum dots.

“…Lasing in the spheres could be achieved by pumping the array with a supercontinuum source, as recently demonstrated by Lipson and coworkers [170], and the output channel could be selected by a microelectromechanical switch or similar. Other detailed reviews of microspheres as photonic tools, which cover some the topics and papers that were missed by this review, have also been published recently [6][7][8].…”

“…[13] Optical mode interaction in coupled cavities is an analog to the electron states in a chemical molecule. [14] Thus this kind of system is usually called as "photonic molecule." The coherent coupling of optical resonant modes and the resultant hybridization effect have been widely investigated both theoretically and experimen tally in photonic molecules consisting of two coupled optical microcavities with identical or closely matched sizes, [15][16][17] where the evanescent field at the cavity surface plays a key mode intensity, resonant mode shift, quality (Q) factor, and mode splitting were demonstrated owing to the hybridized resonances in the couple cavities which appear periodically depending on the mismatched cavitysizes.…”

“…Whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microsphere resonators can have extremely high Q factors (>10 8 ) and are therefore attractive for development of a variety of photonics devices such as miniature lasers, single-photon emitters, sensors and, as templates, for fundamental studies of light-matter interaction [2,3]. Here we report on tunable laser emission from silica microspheres coated with CdSe/CdS core/shell nanorods whose lasing thresholds and modality are controllable by the pump coupling conditions.…”
