Photoprotection of Buddleja cordata extract against UVB-induced skin damage in SKH-1 hairless mice

Abstract: BackgroundIn recent years, there has been considerable interest in using botanical agents to prevent skin damage resulting from solar UV-irradiation. Buddleja cordata is a plant that is known as “tepozan”. Some people in Mexico use the leaves of this plant to treat tumours, abscesses, sores and burns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the photoprotective properties of Buddleja cordata methanolic extract (BCME) against UVB-induced skin damage in SKH-1 hairless mice at the macroscopic and histological … Show more

“…Repetitive UVB irradiation of hairless mice has been used previously to evaluate test compounds on skin photoageing, photodamage, inflammation and tumor development . UVB–induced erythema also has been used clinically in healthy volunteers to assess the photoprotective and anti‐inflammatory activity of potential therapeutic agents .…”

“…Given the acute nature of the experimental protocol, features of both CLE and UVB damage were noted. Classic features found in UVB‐irradiated skin (24 hours following exposure) include thickening of the stratum corneum, epidermal spongiosis, microvesicles/pustules, sunburn cells and superficial vascular dilatation . While these features were seen in both Fn14WT and KO mice, the severity was significantly enhanced in WT.…”

“…& Kunth, commonly known as Tepozán blanco, has been used diversely in Mexican traditional medicine as a treatment for several health disorders, such as tumors, abscesses, sores, burn wounds, rheumatic pains, skin illness and inflammation related to arthritis. Today, these ethno-medicinal uses require support from scientific studies (Ávila- Acevedo et al, 2014).…”
